The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), which oversees organized youth soccer for over 70,000 children in Long Island's 101 community-based clubs, hosted its annual soccer convention at the Huntington Hilton in Melville. The free weekend-long event, which was open to all LIJSL families and the general public, included seminars and workshops covering various topics including goal safety, risk management, an American Red Cross CPR/AED course and a college forum and info-session for all student athletes and their parents interested in knowing more about playing sports in college.
The LIJSL college forum and info-sessions covered various topics such as: how to find the right school, improving SAT scores, what coaches are looking for in players, what is expected of a college athlete and what it is like to play on a college team. The seminar answered many questions about financial aid packages, LIJSL scholarships and admissions. Lectures were given by college coaches, professors, college players and soccer experts including Werner Roth, former captain of the Cosmos and "movie star" of the soccer film Victory. Students and parents also had the opportunity to ask questions about college-level sports and academics. A forum held in Spanish was also available to educate interested individuals.
"The LIJSL is thrilled to continuously bring one of the country's largest conventions dedicated to youth soccer to the Long Island community," stated LIJSL President Addie Mattei-Iaia. "We are committed to building character through soccer and providing our members with educational opportunities. For 26 years now, we have been able to provide an event for the entire family that is not only enjoyable, but educational by creating great opportunities to meet and network with coaches, parents and other soccer fans, where individuals can learn how to get involved and see what's new in the world of soccer at our convention."
The celebration began with the Annual LIJSL Volunteers Awards Dinner, where select individuals were recognized for their dedication to youth soccer on Long Island. The league inducted three of its members into its Hall of Fame: Frank Asselta of Bethpage Soccer Club; Dennis Machtel of West Babylon Soccer Club; and John Schroeder of Massapequa Soccer Club. The league also introduced its Under 12 Sportsmanship Coaches of the Year, Tim Rumph of Southampton Soccer Club and Joe Votinelli of Massapequa Soccer Club. Both coaches were nominated by players on their team through an essay contest, "Why my coach is a good sport." The authors Jacqueline Minogue and Jamie Macchia each received a $500 savings bond. In addition, the LIJSL also recognized 38 volunteers for their dedication to youth soccer on Long Island.
"These volunteers are the reason why the Long Island Junior Soccer League is so effective and successful," said Mattei-Iaia. "They have demonstrated true dedication and commitment to not only our league, but more importantly our youth. Under their leadership, our children are learning that there is more to playing sports than just winning."
