Gymnastics and tumbling demonstrations will be presented by Syosset's Gymnastique, Inc., during the first annual Long Island Sports Expo that takes place Saturday-Sunday, September 6-7, 2008, at the Suffolk County Community College Sports & Exhibition Complex in Brentwood . Gymnastique, Inc. offers an array of gymnastics programs and private instruction for children of all ages and experience levels at its 13,000+ square-foot, fully matted facility on Aerial Way .
Targeted toward all sports and fitness enthusiasts, high school, college and youth athletes, coaches, athletic directors and parents, the Long Island Sports Expo also will feature many exhibitors showcasing products and services, along with a wide array of seminars and hands-on demonstrations focusing on performance training and various sport-specific skills.
Members of the New York Wizards professional entertainment basketball team will help kick things off with an open practice and shoot-around on Saturday. Interactive baseball and basketball demonstrations are scheduled throughout the weekend, with former basketball star Kym Hampton of the WNBA's New York Liberty being among those conducting them. Players from the Long Island Lizards major-league lacrosse team will practice and greet fans on Saturday, while players from the New York Sharks women's professional football team will perform some drills and an interactive demonstration on Sunday afternoon. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) will hold "QuickStart Tennis" demonstrations for kids and conduct tennis fundamentals demonstrations for adults. A putting contest for golfers and would-be golfers also is on the docket, while sanctioned boxing and kick-boxing competitions are slated to close out the evenings.
Fitness personality and video star John Basedow will discuss "Fitness Made Simple," while sport psychologist Dr. Tom Ferraro will explore "Pre-Game Jitters." Other 30-45-minute seminars will focus on sports performance training and conditioning, weight training, athletic injuries and rehabilitation, preventing burnout, mental preparation for athletic events, and coaching techniques.
