Syosset High School's varsity lacrosse team enjoyed a tremendously successful year, capturing titles and winning awards while remaining dedicated students.

The team captured the Long Island Class A Championship, defeating West Islip in an exciting playoff game at Hofstra University. With a score of 9 to 6, Syosset varsity lacrosse claimed their rightful place as champions winning their first Long Island title. This win makes Syosset the second Nassau County school to win the title within the last 20 years. The Braves entered the state championship, but were outscored 11- 7, losing to fifteen time state champions West Genesee.

Additionally, the team was honored to receive the New York State Scholar Athlete Award. The 40 member team's overall scholastic average is 97.3, the highest of any lacrosse team in all of New York State. Athletic Director Richard Schaub had special praise for the team and stated "The Syosset varsity lacrosse team are two time Nassau County Champions, Long Island Champions, NY State Finalists and New York State Scholar Athlete Team Award winners. They excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. We could not be more proud of them."

The team prepared and worked incredibly hard under the direction of head coach, John Calabria, recently awarded Nassau County Coach of the Year and assistant coaches Tom Rooney and Chris Harned, all of whom are Syosset teachers. Coach Calabria stated, "The 2008 Syosset High School Lacrosse season was a tremendous year. Repeating as County Champions in the toughest conference in the county was enough in and of itself. Going on to beat the four-time defending Long Island Champions West Islip in the Long Island Finals was our program greatest achievement. It is not how you start as a team but what you learn during the course of the season. The team came together in 2008 and played their best lacrosse. I can not say enough about the strength, talent, and determination of our boys."
