Hey, Look! The Post Office has placed Frank Sinatra on a 42-cent stamp. There he is, with that savvy grin and a fedora, smiling at the world. Besides his acting ability, in From Here to Eternity, The Man with the Golden Arm and Manchurian Candidate, he is, as the stamp itself states, "admired worldwide as a supreme interpreter of American Popular Songs."
The lyrics of these songs of the 1950s and 1960s are truly meaningful poems with sensitive feeling, that Sinatra brings out beautifully and rhythmically. I will list some of these songs and some of the lyrics. Listen to the deep feeling of the words:
- I've Got the World on a String (Harold Arlen)
Sitting on a rainbow
I've got the string around my finger
What a World! What a life! I'm in love!
- I Get A Kick Out of You (Cole Porter)
And I suddenly see
Your fabulous face before me
I get no kick from champagne
More alcohol doesn't thrill me at all
- They Can't Take That Away From Me (Greshwin)
The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, No, They can't take that away from me.
- My Funny Valentine (Rodgers/Hart)
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, unphotographable
- Young at Heart (Cleigh)
Fairy tales can come true
It can happen to you
If you're young at heart
- Someone to Watch over Me (G and Ira Gershwin)
There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that she, turns out to be
Someone to watch over me
- In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning (D. Mann)
While the whole wide world is fast asleep you lie awake
You think about the girl
And you never think about counting sheep
- I've Got You Under My Skin (Cole Porter)
I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
- You Make Me Feel So Young (Mack Gordon)
You make me feel stho' spring has sprung
And everytime I see you grin
I'm such a happy individual
- Night and Day (Cole Porter)
You are the one
Only you beneath the moon and under the sun
- The Lady Is A Tramp (Rogers/Hart)
She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She likes the theater, and never comes late
She never bothers with people she'd hate,
That's why the lady is a tramp.
Notice when Frank sings, every word is understood. Every word and beat comes together beautifully. In today's world, we desperately need more Sinatra.
