A very exciting season and year in Roslyn Athletics was celebrated at Roslyn High School's annual Spring Sports Awards program on June 2. A large and enthusiastic audience in the auditorium cheered the many accomplishments of Roslyn's student-athletes and coaches. These are some of the highlights of the season and the awards program:
The boys varsity volleyball team had the best regular season record in its conference and advanced to the county championship finals. In a thrilling match at the C.W. Post arena in which the lead changed hands several times between two evenly matched teams, Roslyn made a stunning comeback in the final and deciding game to tie the score before second-seeded Jericho finally won the game and the championship by the narrowest possible margin of two points. Coach Maureen Timony was selected as volleyball coach of the year.
Six members of the boys tennis team entered the Nassau County Invitational Tournament at Oceanside in May. They were seniors Alex Abedine and Brad Cohn, juniors Jared Gans and Chad Levy, and sophomores Austin Blau and Alexander Werman. Coach Kerri McMahon was very proud of the team's efforts.
Both the Roslyn High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse team and Girls Varsity Softball team were named as #1 Scholar Athlete teams in New York State. They won the distinction by having the highest GPA among several hundred teams in the state in their respective sports. Patrick Pizzarelli, 1st vice president of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and athletic director of the Lawrence School District, presented the awards to the teams at the sports awards program. He noted that having two teams from the same school win in a single season was an unprecedented achievement. Every one of Roslyn's varsity teams earned distinction as a scholar-athlete team by having a team cumulative average of 90 or higher.
Eight seniors were honored as 12-season athletes for their participation in every season of athletics during their Roslyn High School careers. The students are Samantha Arnowitz, Marissa Ball, Danielle Efros, Alexandra Foukalas (13 seasons), Adam Kaplan, Thomas Lipari, Matthew Murillo and Brian Sherwin.
Student athletes were presented with a number of special awards and scholarships from community organizations including the Bulldog Boosters, Roslyn Little League, Roslyn Booster Basketball Club and the Silpe family. In a moving tribute, Marty Litt presented a new award in memory of his wife, Stacey Litt, who died several months ago. The scholarship, presented to Rachel Abeles, honors an athlete who has shown extraordinary service and generosity to worthy causes. Other students earning special awards and recognition were Marissa Ball, Morgan Carella, David Chase, Bradley Cohn, Rebecca Cooper, Alexander Daniels, Danielle Efros, Alexandra Foukalas, Michael Jacobson, Adam Kaplan, Jacob Levy, Thomas Lipari and Matthew Murillo.
Emily Lipari earned another rousing ovation as track coaches Kevin Kearney and Vera Trenchfield unfurled a banner the school received in recognition of Emily's first-place performance in the New York State Cross Country Championships last fall.
Catherine Dodd, a Roslyn High School physical education teacher and coach, was chosen by the Bulldog Boosters as "Coach of the Year" for her contributions to high school and middle school badminton and bowling. She was also recognized for her selection as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program to Japan; she leaves on June 8 for a fully funded three-week experience.
