More thievery has taken place at Roslyn High School. This time, it wasn't from the embezzlement scandal.
Detectives from the Sixth Squad of the Nassau County Police Department have reported that a case of Grand Larceny took place at the high school sometime between Friday, Feb. 10 and Tuesday, Feb. 14.
According to detectives, the proceeds of $8,000 raised by a student fundraiser for the American Cancer Society was stolen from a safe located inside Roslyn High School.
In all, the fundraiser netted $19,000 in proceeds. Early police reports stated that the entire proceeds were stolen. However, detectives discovered that only $8,000 in cash was taken. The rest of the monies---$11,000---were in the form of numerous checks. Those checks, according to detectives, were left in an envelope that had also contained the stolen cash.
Although the thievery was a shocking development to students and administrators alike, school district members didn't waste anytime in trying to retrieve the stolen funds.
Barry Edelson, a spokesman for the school district said that several employees unions in the district immediately offered to contribute donations to make up for the $8,000.
In addition, a private citizen in the district also offered to make his own donation. In all, such pledges would more than compensate for the stolen funds, Edelson said.
"This doesn't make up for how disappointed everyone was," Edelson said. "It was a particularly nasty crime. The individual must have known that the monies were earmarked for charity. But on the day the story broke, staff members got together to plan how to make up for the lost money."
Edelson added that the students who planned the benefit also took a video of the event. They are still considering whether to offer a sale of that video as another way to make money.
The quick response by local residents and school district employees was due to the nature of the crime, but also to the fact that the charity, as Edelson put it "is the real victim of the crime."
The Cancer Benefit Fashion Show took place on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the auditorium of Roslyn High School. The show featured clothing and dancing, and also a silent auction, which included bids on such items as vacations, tickets, electronics, jewelry, and dinners. Food and refreshments were supplied by Matteo's, Hokkaido, and Chicken Kebab.
Detectives request that anyone with information regarding this crime contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
