The Jayhawks, a Roslyn fourth grade travel basketball team playing in the SuperLeague at Island Garden, have now won their last three games in impressive fashion. Successive wins over the Port Washington Northstars, Our Lady of Mercy and the LI Trotters have propelled the Jayhawks to a 4-2 record which puts them among the very top of the elite 23 team division.
Coached by David Rothman, Stu Dinetz and Jeff Gould, the team has been together for two seasons and they play an aggressive, gambling defense that looks to fastbreak at every opportunity.
On Nov. 27, in a nail-biter at the JCC, the team bested highly ranked Port Washington 34-32. Led by Jared Fried and Brian Rogofsky with 9 points each and Kenny Rothman with 8, the Jayhawks led most of the game by 6-10 points. A late rally by PW eventually faltered as the Jayhawks were able to run down the clock and preserve the win.
On Dec. 5 at Island Garden, the Jayhawks cruised to a 25-12 win over OLM. The game was never in doubt and as the Jayhawks' stifling man-to-man defense shut down OLM. Offensively, the Jayhawks patiently moved the ball around looking for easy scores as they worked through their offensive repertoire.
Finally, on Dec. 10 at Island Garden, the Jayhawks stared down the imposing LI Trotters. The game was a back and forth affair until midway through the second quarter when the Jayhawks went to a smaller and quicker lineup and took out of storage their punishing 1-3-1 half-court trap. Paced by Kenny Rothman's 18 points, they took home an inspired 39-29 victory. Brian Rogofsky (8) and Alex Klausner (8) each added key fourth quarter buckets as the Jayhawks outscored the Trotters 16-4 in that final period. The backcourt defense of Rothman, Fried (2), Jacob Dinetz and Brandon Friedman forced a slew of turnovers while the front court of Rogofsky, Klausner, Ben Rashbaum (2 points, 12 rebounds), Danny Gould (1 point, 7 rebounds), Ben Mitchell and Reid Karp, all gamely fought and won a war under the boards with the much taller Trotter team.
The Jayhawks next play Sunday, Dec. 18, at 3 p.m. at the JCC against the Plainview PAL and again on Thursday, Dec. 22, at 6:15 p.m. at Island Garden against the POB Hawks. The Dec. 18 contest is part of a back-to-back affair with their Varsity brothers, the LIL-Jammers, who play LIL-Rasco at 4:15 p.m. in a 6-I Division game.
