The indictments keep coming in the embezzlement scandal.

Only days after former Superintendent Dr. Frank A. Tassone pleaded guilty to grand larceny charges and agreed to pay back at least $2 million of stolen monies to the district, Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced the arrest of John McCormick for stealing approximately $85,000 from the Roslyn School District.

"From November 1, 2000 to October 30, 2002, McCormick charged approximately $85,000 to the Roslyn School District's Home Depot credit card for various purchases in connection with his business as a contractor," Dillon said at a Wednesday press conference in Mineola.

"The purchases were made at eight Home Depot stores in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and paid without the knowledge or authorization of the Roslyn School District," Dillon continued. "The credit card had originally been given to McCormick by his mother, Pamela Gluckin, to pay for her home improvement expenses."

In October 2002 when questions arose about the expenditures at Home Depot, McCormick and Ms. Gluckin created false documents to conceal his theft of the District's money, Dillon added.

McCormick has been charged with Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony and Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, a Class E Felony. He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison. He was arraigned on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in First District Court in Hempstead.

"The investigation into the Roslyn School District is continuing and we do anticipate additional arrests," said Dillon. "I would like to thank New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi and his staff for their assistance during the course of this investigation," the district attorney concluded.

The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The arrest of McCormick is the sixth one made so far in the scandal. Of all the indictments handed down, only Dr. Tassone's has been resolved. Former school district employees who have been arrested include Ms. Gluckin, a former assistant superintendent for the district and Debra Rigano, a former account clerk.

In addition, Andrew Miller, the former auditor of the Roslyn School District and Stephen Signorelli have also been charged. Ms. Gluckin has been estimated as responsible for $4 million in theft, while Ms. Rigano's embezzlement total is said to be as high as $780,000. Miller was a partner for Miller, Lilly & Pearce, LLP, Certified Public Accountants. Not only was that firm the audit partner for the Roslyn district, but for no less than over 50 districts in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Part of Dr. Tassone's plea agreement is a 4-12 year prison term. Sentencing will take place in late November.
