The fourth annual Richard D. Lynch II Memorial Golf Tournament raised more than $1 million for the children of victims of 9/11. The fundraising event was held last month at the Great Rock Golf Club in Wading River.
The Douglas Pierce family of Roslyn was among the event's organizers.
The tournament is named after Richard D. Lynch II, who died because of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, leaving behind his wife, Christina, and daughter, Olivia, who was only a year old at the time of his death. Lynch is the son of Dick Lynch, the play-by-play announcer for the New York Giants for more than 35 years and a former Notre Dame football standout and all-pro defensive back for the Giants.
Thomas Costello, himself a former New York Giant and co-owner of the Great Rock Golf Club along with the Pierce family organized the tournament.
Costello had committed to raising $1 million to benefit Lynch's family and several other children's charities.
"As we have the last three years, we asked past and present teammates and other New York athletes to participate in our fundraising golf tournament. Despite their often busy schedules, many of these athletes came to help us raise the money," explained Lynch. "I am pleased that so many athletes from several different professional sports participated. The tournament has become a remarkable event, which truly shows the best side of New Yorkers and New York athletes."
