This year Relay For Life is scheduled for June 19 and 20, at Schreiber High School and Port Washington.
Roslyn residents are invited to participate in Relay For Life, an entertaining way to help raise critical funds for the American Cancer Society. It is a celebration of life and survivorship and a way to honor those who have lost their lives to this devastating disease.
Last year tudents, friends, neighbors, club members, families, businesses, forming more than 50 teams, came together, pitched tents, decorated campsites and walked, danced or ran along a track, raising funds, awareness and spirits of those present and just plain having fun.
Those who have survived cancer always walk the first lap of relay. Through the efforts of the American Cancer Society and the researchers it has funded over the years, there are more long-term survivors all the time. The second lap is devoted to survivors and those people who distinguished themselves with their special help and support, those who prepared meals, drove patients, watched children, and were there for cancer patients during their healing process.
The most touching moment at Relay is at nightfall when the luminary bags that line the track (last year there were more than 3,000) are lighted. Each bag bears the name of someone who battled cancer. It represents hope for those who are currently in treatment, those who have fought cancer in the past, and it's a remembrance of those we've lost.
The date is Saturday, June 19, at 7 p.m. to Sunday, June 20 at 7 a.m. The next team captains' meeting is Tuesday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Schreiber High School cafeteria. For more information, call Ted Vlavianos at ACS 921-6082, ext. 3024, or visit the website www.cancer.org.
