(The following is the full text of a letter sent to all residents in the Roslyn School District last week. It was signed by all seven members of the Roslyn Board of Education and myself. I strongly encourage residents with questions, comments or concerns about this important matter to call my office at 625-6303.)
Dear School District Resident:
In October 2002, it was brought to the attention of the board of education that a school district employee had misappropriated school district funds. The board took immediate action and secured the employee's resignation as well as the restitution of the amount of money identified at that time by the independent auditor. The district also notified the New York State Education Department of the employee's misconduct to ensure that she could never work again in the same capacity.
In addition, the school board, in conjunction with its independent auditor, made improvements in its internal financial controls. The goal of the board throughout these troubling events has been to protect Roslyn taxpayers and, most importantly, the educational programs we provide for the children in our community.
Recently, it has come to light that the former employee's misappropriation of funds may have been more extensive than evidenced in the original information uncovered in October 2002. The Nassau County District Attorney's office has commenced an investigation with the full cooperation of the Roslyn School Board and Administration.
We will continue to keep you informed as the investigation progresses. If you have questions, concerns or comments, you are welcome, as always, to call Dr. Tassone at 625-6303.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Frank A. Tassone, Superintendent of Schools
