A community-based group in Glen Head is starting a rugby team in the area. It would be the first ever rugby team in the area for boys under 19. The team will compete in Division II of the New York Metropolitan Rugby Union with four home games and three away games.
A rugby team consists of 15 players, with no timeouts, pads, or helmets. A rugby ball is larger than a football and the game is played in two, 40-minute halves. No forward passes or blocking is allowed. Tackles must be below the neck and the field is slightly larger that a regular football field, which allows for a lot of open running and passes between players sometimes throwing the ball around from one end of the field to the other.
The group is looking to build a team for the future. Tryouts practices are open to all high school students (boys) or players under 19 years of age. For information call Coach Royal at 395-6977 or his cell phone at 759-1635.
