The R. Brinkley Smithers Invitational benefiting The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence's (LICADD) education and prevention programs for children will be held on Monday, Sept. 15. LICADD's prestigious Community Service Award will be presented to this year's honoree, former New York Islander and NHL Hall of Famer Clark Gillies for his efforts on behalf of LICADD and children's charities.
Now entering its 23rd consecutive year, the event has been proudly renamed in honor of LICADD's founder R. Brinkley Smithers and expanded to include two fabulous courses for simultaneous play. Michael Danzi, committee co-chairman, announced, "Due to the popularity of this tournament, it will be expanded and played on both of the spectacular courses, The Creek and Piping Rock."
Co-Chairman, Bill Baum noted, "The tournament will be followed by a reception and dinner featuring an unparalleled live auction for the most sought-after golfing packages at exclusive courses on Long Island and Westchester County." Well-known broadcast personality John R. Gambling will be the master of ceremonies and the reception will enjoy the great sounds of The Marvin Floyd Trio.
Co-Chairman Curtis Webster stated, "LICADD is indeed privileged to have the opportunity to pay tribute to R. Brinkley Smithers, the organization's founder, particularly at this time as we expand the event in such wonderful ways." Mr. Webster noted this tournament has become a Long Island tradition as a very popular charity and business venue tournament providing supporters the opportunity to play at stellar golf courses, while raising funds for children in need on Long Island. Proceeds from this event are earmarked for LICADD's lifesaving educational programs designed to assist children and families recover from the devastating effects of the disease of alcoholism and other drug addictions.
Raffle Chairman William Spencer said, "This should be an exceptional tournament with a unique Live Auction featuring playing opportunities at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, National Golf Links of America, Southampton, Maidstone Golf Club, Piping Rock Club, The Atlantic Golf Club, Gardiner's Bay Country Club, Wykagyl Country Club, The Creek and Meadow Brook Club. Mr. Danzi added that this year's special grand prize for the raffle will be the popular Mini Cooper automobile.
Sponsorship opportunities, as well as player foursomes and tee signs, are available through LICADD's development office, and early reservations are highly recommended. Fields will be carefully limited to ensure fast play at both The Creek and Piping Rock.
