Walter J. Kowalczyk, 77, formerly of Albertson, died on June 13, 2000. He was born in Manhattan and served in the Coast Guard during WWII. He worked for the NY Telephone Company, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Kowalczyk was involved with the Polish Gift of Life, working with St. Francis Hospital, he was host to Polish children and their families coming to the US to receive heart-related medical care. He and his wife sometimes hosted the families at their own house, visited them at the hospital and helped translate. He was also involved with the American Legion, the NY Telephone Pioneers of America, the Holiday Heights Men's Club and Social Club, the Polish American Club of Toms River, NJ, the Polish Children Heart Line and the Deborah Hospital Foundation. He was a volunteer at Old Westbury Gardens.
Mr. Kowalczyk is survived by his wife, Julie; children, Walter G. Kowalczyk, Kristine Vogt and Karen Piszczak; and eight grandchildren. Services at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Toms River. Interment BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. Contributions can be made to Hospice Care Network, 900 Merchants Concourse, Westbury, NY 11590.
Bella Scuderi, of Roslyn Harbor, died on June 18, 2000. Wife of Vincent. Mother of Vincent, Paula Frey and John. Grandmother of Michael, Alex, Christopher, John, Vincent, Nicole, Thomas, Liza and Jessica. Sister of Claire, Pat and Nofie. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Cancer Research Institute.
