Letters to the Editor

As former Board of Education members of the East Williston Union Free School District, we wholeheartedly support the candidacy of Jeff Saporta. Jeff is a longtime resident of the district and has sent two children through all three of its schools. Jeff has been an extremely active member of the community, and he has always been known to be an advocate for children.

The East Williston School District continues to face many challenges, not the least of which concerns our facilities and technological requirements. We dealt with many of these issues in the past and were pleased to support a bond issue that brought many needed changes to our district in the early 1990s. The district is again faced with these challenges as enrollment has grown substantially. Jeff has the credentials to be of great assistance to the school district and community in this current effort. Jeff is an attorney specializing in real estate and has considerable knowledge of finance and construction. His expertise and knowledge will be invaluable in assisting with the implementation of new construction and technology.

Jeff is also an advocate for public education and enhancing the already high quality of our school district. He is a proven community leader, and given the needs of the East Williston School District now and in the foreseeable future, when we evaluate a board member in terms of those needs, Jeff Saporta's resume is a perfect match.

We urge you to support his candidacy on Tuesday, May 16.

We applaud the voters of the Roslyn School District for the overwhelming passage of the bond proposition last month and for responding so positively to the comprehensive plan for accommodating rising student enrollment and addressing facilities issues districtwide. On Tuesday, May 16, voters will once again go to the polls, this time to vote on the school budget for 2000-01.

Although we are members of the Roslyn Board of Education, we have a right to speak in our individual capacities and, without expending public funds, make our personal views known. In this capacity as taxpayers and concerned citizens of the Roslyn School District, we are well aware of the many challenges ahead:

* maintaining appropriate class sizes in light of rising enrollment;

* providing support for students to meet higher academic standards;

* maintaining a high level of child-centered special services;

* maintaining the high level of education for which Roslyn has been nationally recognized

The 2000-01 school budget is a prudent and fiscally responsible budget that addresses everything from computer technology to school buses; from foreign language in the elementary schools to Advanced Placement courses at the high school; from enrichment programs for all students to programs for all students with special needs. Also very important is providing to our youngsters all of the numerous extracurricular, athletic and performing arts programs which are a part of a comprehensive public education that produces graduates who are well-rounded and well-prepared to take their place as leaders in our society.

Every Roslyn resident can be proud of the investment they have made in our schools and our students, and we ask that they renew that long-term commitment by voting for the school budget on Tuesday, May 16. We urge residents to show their support for this budget which, we firmly believe, is necessary to preserve the excellent educational program that has been built in our community over the course of many years.

Maintaining quality public education is costly in the short run; not maintaining it is much more costly in the long run.

Susan Bergtraum is running for re-election to the board of education in the East Williston School District. To know her is to recognize that there is not a person more sincere nor an advocate of our children more passionate, than Susan.

I have watched for years as Susan has relentlessly worked for the enrichment of this community through her involvement in our schools. It has never been easy¬criticism comes easily to the Monday morning quarterbacks who do not attend meetings, but rally after the fact when an issue becomes high profile. Susan has remained undaunted because her true motivation is the welfare and education of the students of this district.

Amazingly, her idealism and faith in human nature persists. I have seen Susan attend almost every event at each of the three schools, particularly after her own children had moved on to college. I marvel at her patience, her compassion, her tireless optimism and her sense of fairness. Susan is always examining both sides of an issue.

We have had the privilege of Susan Bergtraum on our board of education in East Williston. For the sake of the children who need her to stand up for them, let us re-elect Susan on May 16 at the Wheatley School.
