The Roslyn Bulldogs' once-promising 1998-99 basketball season came to a disappointing end last Thursday as they lost to Island Tree 47-29 in the first round of the Nassau County Class B Tournament.
After peaking at a 13-2 overall record and a conference-leading 9-1 mark, the Bulldogs lost their last three games to finish with a 13-5 record. Despite the losing streak, Roslyn posted one of their most successful basketball seasons in recent years.
At Thursday night's game, the Bulldogs never got untracked offensively, failing to reach double-digits in any of the four quarters. They led 9-8 after the first quarter, but cold shooting by the Bulldogs enabled Island Trees to pull ahead in the second quarter and hold on from there.
No Bulldog reached personal double-digits in the scoring column. Steven Glasco (8 points) and Bentley Mays (6) led the Bulldogs in scoring, as the two have all season long. For Glasco, the Island Tree contest was his last game as a Bulldog. The '98-'99 squad was loaded with seniors: Jamie Goldstein, Benjamin Sahn, David Bloom, Shawn Carter, Lance Dease, Jonathan Matamoros, Thomas John Perra, and Michael Shillman also saw their Roslyn High basketball careers end with the playoff loss.
Returning next year for Coach Kevin Walsh's squad will be Bentley Mays, who, along with Steven Glasco, was the team's leading scorer, and four other varsity players, including Bentley's brother, Curtis, a six-foot-three forward.
