As homeowners in Roslyn Heights on Donaldson Place we are appalled at what is happening in our town and the surrounding communities. As we drive around we shudder at the sight of all the overdevelopment that is taking place, especially new oversized homes crowded together, and the loss of so many beautiful old trees. Communities must unite and look at what is happening around them.
We, ourselves, are facing more crowding on our street. When we moved here in 1973 there were only three homes on the east side of Donaldson Place, now there are four, the newest built on an undersized lot. Now the lot next to this house has been purchased by a builder, with the intention of replacing the existing home with two new homes with one lot having insufficient plot area; for this he is seeking a variance.
All residents within 200 feet of the subject property have sent letters voicing their opposition. Thirty-two letters were sent.
After sending all these protests and attending two meetings, the Zoning Board has yet to make a decision. What are the guidelines for the Town of North Hempstead for making decisions on variances? We feel that when a variance is granted for a home to be built on an undersized lot the Town of North Hempstead is basically subsidizing these builders at the residents' expense.
We are not asking the Zoning Board to bend or break any laws but to adhere to the enforcement of the zoning laws already in place.
