Marty Glickman, the renowned former track star and sportscaster, and Stan Isaacs, former Newsday sports columnist, are the featured speakers for the "Doubleheader Dinner" Meeting of the Men's Club of Temple Beth Sholom, to be held on Thursday evening, Oct. 29.
Sports fans will remember Glickman as one of the best known broadcasters of New York City sports. He was the announcer for many of the most exciting games in history. He covered baseball, hockey, football, wrestling and basketball. He broadcast games for the Knicks, Giants and Jets. Before that, he was an accomplished American track star. In 1936, he qualified for a spot on the American delegation that competed in the Berlin Olympics.
Stan Isaacs is a longtime resident of Roslyn Heights. For many years, he was a feature and sports media columnist for Newsday. His coverage goes all the way back to the original New York Mets. During his career he was at ringside when Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship. He also covered the New York Yankees for many years, including the 1961 season when Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record. In 1996, Isaacs and Glickman collaberated on a book, The Fastest Kid on The Block, which was published by Syracuse University Press.
