On Oct. 3rd at noon legislators from Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk counties will gather for the Sixth Annual Legislative Reception at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. The event is held annually to recognize the legislators from the counties served for their exemplary compassion and support for the families. "With all the kindness that the legislators have shown toward the House, this is the least we can do to thank them for their continued support for the children," said Patricia Donnelly, Legislative Representative. The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is a 'home-away-from home' for families who are caring for seriously ill children undergoing medical treatment in area hospitals. Located on the campus of Schneider Children's Hospital, the House accommodates families in a warm and supportive environment.

An infants and children's clothing drive will be held at Gloria Dei Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Collecting clothing from infant to size 14 and all types of baby essentials such as baby monitors, cribs, car seats, etc. Also accepted are children's books. Want to donate but can't get there?

On Oct. 4, from noon to 4 p.m., NASA's 50th anniversary and World Astronomy Day will be celebrated at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Children of all ages will be able to see the evening sky inside the Cradle's Star Lab and also participate in Sun Spotting (weather permitting) with members of the Amateur Observers Society. "NASA's 50th Anniversary and World Astronomy Day combine for a very special day at the museum," said Todd Richman, Cradle board chair. "Families can come and have a great deal of fun while learning about the space program, which is a big part of the museum's collection." Fly Me to the Moon, the new IMAX film that tells the story of a bunch of intrepid flies who stow away on the first Apollo mission, is also the theme of a number of "out of this world" family activities including Inter-Planetary Twister and Flyswatter Badminton. Plus, for the NASA's 50th birthday you'll be able to have a piece of birthday cake. Activities are free with museum admission. The Cradle of Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest collections of air and spacecraft in the region. Over 75 air and spacecraft are displayed in eight museum galleries, which will guide you through over 100 years of aviation history. The museum is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row in the Garden City/Uniondale area. The Cradle is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30 am. to 5 p.m., as well as holiday Mondays.
