TOPSoccer

As we wind up the season, we had an unusual summer-like day in November. With only two weeks left, it seemed like we were closing out the spring season, not the fall. We had super-coach Pete Zimmerman try his hand with the juniors and he came up big again with goals galore. Ryan McCurry led the way with 3 goals. Liam Carroll, Liam O'Brien and Julius Sum added two apiece, for an insurmountable 9 goal total. The coaches tried very hard as Amy Limoncelli pounded away and was able to sneak in 2 goals. But try as she might, the defense held up and denied her a hat trick. Goalie Rich even stopped one off his nose - ouch! Maiken added one and there was one 'own goal' to end this lopsided contest at 9-4. The seniors continued their great play from last week as demonstrated by the variety of scorers. Matt Saraiva, Stefani Egre, Alex Warner and Debbie Chin each had one in a dominating 4-2 win. Mike Antonoff came up big at midfield with solid two-way play. The coaches had one from Krys and one from Marty but it was way too little and not part of any organized offensive threat. Referee Rich had some strange calls, including one you won't find in the rule books anywhere, which resulted in a direct kick. Almost seemed like he made things up as he went. Anyway, it made for an interesting morning. Friday night is the TOPSoccer dinner at the Melville Marriott. And the following week is our season-ending parents vs. the players match. The parents looked very blasé and relaxed. It will take more than looks to compete with the players on the field. They're playing with a load of confidence and are peaking at the right time. The parents winless streak could be extended and they are in danger of coming close to matching the hapless Cubs. Only time will tell. Rich Bletsch

10/30-05 game: Cheetah Girls - The team showed some great passing today. Caitlin Cosme, Mariella Facibene, and Caroline Stigliano were aggressive dribbling the ball up field. Danielle Gerbe and Jennifer Morrone held the fort on defense with big kicks. Caira Jennings, Hannah Arkin, Emma Nidermaier, and Natalie Kariotis shared the goalie duties with some great saves. Great passing. keep it up!

Bobcats vs. Dolphins - This was the game of the season. The Bobcats and Dolphins both did a tremendous job and kept this game exciting till the end. The Bobcats came out with an outstanding offensive effort by Siobhan McMullan, Elaine Liu and Olivia Lugo. The Dolphin goalie was tough and not afraid to show how a Dolphin Dives. Samantha Katsanos was relentless in her attempts and got in there to score four goals! When Elaine Liu wasn't assisting her teammates she was busy scoring a

goal of her own. Sara Pierce and Edna Dudek did their part this week to contribute both on offense and defense. Hats off to goalies on both teams, they had a lot of action out there today. All their efforts at practice really paid off today. We missed Tiffany Velin and Shannon Grant this week we hope to see them for the festival.

U-8 Playoffs

Angels vs Power - It was an unseasonably warm fall Sunday as Coach Daniel's Angels faced the Power team in round two of the playoffs. In spite of a spirited offense led by Eva, Maeve, Catherine and Jane, the Power team was able to prevent any scoring. Meanwhile the defense led by Gabriella in the goal and Dana, Bianca, and Crista effectively bottled up the Power offense allowing only one goal in the entire first half. Due to Gabriella sustaining an injury in the first half the goal was filled by Dana, then Maeve and Bianca to finish the game. The Angels played hard up to the final whistle with Eva continually driving in the offensive zone and Dana stopping many drives by the Power offense. Maeve was great in support on offense and all the girls including Bianca, Jane, Crista, and Catherine, played hard to keep the pressure off the Angel goalie.

Thunder Cats 1 Princesses 0 - The Princesses and Thunder Cats treated their family and friends to a tremendously exciting, action packed playoff contest this week. Just two weeks after losing a one sided 5-1 game to the powerful Cats the Princesses came back with fire in their spikes. Both teams went at each other for the entire game neither team backing up. The Princesses' goalie Samantha turned back multiple shots by the Cats throughout the day. Kaitlyn tested the Cats goalie early only to be denied. McKenzie moved up to offense and won many balls in the offensive zone. Jackie and Ashley kept pressure on the Cats defense, controlling the ball in the offensive zone. They both did a super job coming back into the defensive zone to control the high powered Thunder Cats offense. Jessica and Laura were the anchors on defense, protecting their goalie and picking their spots to carry the ball into their offensive zone. The entire Princesses team played an outstanding game pressuring the Thunder Cats and keeping their offense in check. Great game Princesses! Congratulations Thunder Cats on a well earned victory. Best of luck to both the Power and the Thunder Cats in this week's championship game.

Kickin' Kittens - Well, the fall season is coming to an end and the

Kittens are a prime example of why youth sports are so enjoyable. I want to congratulate all the Kittens for working together and making the most of a challenging season. Even when the score was not a favorable one, the girls played with enthusiasm and seemed to have a good time. All the girls tried their best and showed much improvement from those first practices in September to our last playoff game. I really enjoyed watching Brittney Stevenson hustling out on the field and seeing Arianna Ramdass becoming more confident and making good plays. I was delighted when Brianna Singh would speed across the field in pursuit of the ball. It was a lot of fun watching Daniela Fusaro's wonderful athleticism and all out effort. Everyone cheered when Isabel Ryan went on those exciting drives at full speed. Sarahelena Barrios and Fiona Kiernan have come a long way from those first games in Cabbage Patch and are excellent soccer players. I know that with the hard work and energy that Taylor Cosme and Katya Keblish put out every game, they will become outstanding players. Thank you to all the girls. A note of gratitude also goes to all the parents for all your help and support. Please remember, if any of you start going through soccer withdrawal symptoms, indoor soccer is not too far away. Keep on Kickin' Kittens. Coach Juan.

Lady Leopards 0 East Meadow 3 - Our goalies worked very hard in this make-up game where East Meadow's offense was relentless, and had the advantage of several important calls being made in their favor. Eve Rigas in the first half and Celeste Lyons in the second kept the scoring contained, supported by defenders Alana Cohen, Rebecca Lewis, and Caroline Weinberg. Our offense kept the pressure on. Madison Cascio, Danielle Michaels, Taylor Ross, Kaitlin Shea, and Hannah Zeitlin passed skillfully, and charged the net repeatedly, only to have the ball booted out by a solid East Meadow defense. Among the highlights were a header by Danielle on an East Meadow throw-in, a goal post block by Caroline, and of course, the goalies' fearless saves.

Girls U-11 Travel - 11/5/05

Today the Lady Jaguars put a damper on the Farmingdale Storm's early celebration, as the Lady Jaguars who were down 2-0 fought back to gain a tie. The girls were having a hard time putting it together in the 1st half and found themselves down 2-0. With about a minute to go, hard charging Jillian Graziano was taken down in the box. A penalty kick was awarded to the Jags. Coach McGrath gave the nod to Erica Sousa to take the shot. Erica came through plastering the ball past the Farmingdale keeper. The half ended with New Hyde Park trailing 2-1. Ashley Tuffy was strong in goal making 12 saves and handling the ball countless other times. The defense, Enza Decrescenzo, Emma McGrath, Julianne Randazzo, Erica Sousa and Gabby Tomasini, stepped it up and shut out the Farmingdale offense in the second half. The Midfield also followed suit and controlled the ball well. Alison Richiutti, Ailish Malone, Jillian Stacom and Jillian Graziano took the play into the Storm's end of the field. On one such play Jillian Graziano, who was the player of the match, drove down the right side of the field and again was pulled down. However this time it was out of the penalty box. This set up a direct free kick for the Lady Jaguars. The Storm players formed their wall to try and stop Erica Sousa's shot, however Erica placed the ball high over the defense and the outstretched hands of the goalie for her second goal of the game. This tied the game at 2-2.The play remained spirited until the end of the game. The Jaguars were able to fight back and gain a valuable point in the standings. Thanks to all of the Parents and friends that traveled out to Farmingdale to support us.

The Lady Jaguars went on the Prowl in Valley Stream in search of a victory. They played the Valley Stream Hurricanes who seemed like a Category 4 Hurricane in the 1st half. Although the Lady Jaguars had a few good runs the quick footed V.S. Defense and their excellent goal tender kept the ladies off of the board. The Hurricane's struck 1st with a multiple passing play that was finished nicely resulting in a goal. The half ended with V.S. leading 1-0. Goal Keeper Ashley Tuffy and the Jaguar Defense handled everything that came their way. As a matter of fact they held the Hurricanes to only 6 shots on goal for the entire game. Although the Jags had put a lot of pressure on the Valley Stream goal they did not get on the board until the Hurricanes were called for a hand ball in the box. Ailish Malone (Goal) took the penalty shot and buried the ball low and out of reach of the Valley Stream goal tender. Once the girls were able to crack the armor they kept chipping away. On one play Gabby Tomasini (Assist) was working hard trying to knock in a rebound, she froze the keeper and found Victoria Caccamo on the doorstep of the goal mouth who hammered it in for the go ahead goal. The girls continued to chip away, they had a total of 16 shots on goal for the game. Moments later, Gabby Tomasini assisted Victoria Caccamo for the Lady Jaguars third goal. (This was Victoria's 10th goal of the season) New Hyde Park secured the victory and the 3 points that go with it. The Lady Jags have 2 games left in the Fall Season, they will be playing rivals - North Shore All Stars and Levittown United to round out the schedule. Thanks again to all of the Parents, friends and family members for coming out to support us.

Lightning

We ended the season with 5 round robin games. The boys had a lot of fun and were thrilled when they received their trophies, the bobble heads were a big hit!! As always David Escorcia was ready to play, he did an exceptional job covering the field from defense to offense and even saving a goal during the first game. In total he scored 4 goals for the day. Justin Pumillo did a nice job as well blocking numerous balls in the defensive end and while on offense scored a goal, great work. Dylan Edwards and Robert Becker used their power kicks to get the ball back to the forwards, they had a lot of hustling to do . Goal was handled by Robert Becker, Kunal Suri and Gabriel Rodriguez. While on offense Gabriel Rodriguez took control of the ball and took a nice shot on goal, we want to see more of this next season. Thomas Germana was back after a few weeks and he was ready to get the ball, good work. James Connolly showed us some nice passing and did a great job on defense. We missed Hunter Steinmann and Marty Koch this week; Hope you are feeling better. Lightning put in a lot of hard work and dedication this season. A special thanks to my assistant, Mike Pumillo for all his hard work this season. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles who came to support our team each week. Port Washington 3 - Stray Cats 2

Terrific effort by all the Stray Cat players in an epic battle versus a strong Port Washington team. The highly touted match between two of the league's premier teams did not disappoint the raucous crowd. The Stray Cats, playing without their entire team early in the first half, were tenacious and aggressive. Defensemen Steven Cacchioli, Billy Stevens, Chris Ferlazzo, Tyler Carrick, Andrew Blumenson, and Chris Sacino played flawlessly, denying the Port Washington offense time after time. Goalie Stephen Eranovic was superb as well, making four amazing saves. The Cats, now at full strength, finished the fist half with a scoreless tie. The Cats came out strong in the second half as Forwards/Midfielders Ciaran Stack, Cian Fitzgerald, Ryan Korzevinsky, and Bryan O'Neill pushed up hard and kept the pressure on. Port scored three quick goals, but the Cats fought back. Ciaran Stack netted a beautiful header off a perfect corner kick from Billy Stevens to get the Cats on the board. The Cats closed the gap to 3-2 late in the game when Billy blasted a laser by the keeper off a nice pass from Bryan. The Cats kept the pressure on, but unfortunately ran out of time. A well played game by both teams.
