Suffolk County Police's Second Squad detectives are investigating an incident where an alleged argument between two drivers led to the injury of a Hicksville man on Thursday, July 24 at 8:35 p.m. on a westbound exit ramp of the Long Island Expressway (LIE).
According to police, Robert Maduro, Jr., 40, of West Babylon was driving a 1998 freightliner tractor-trailer on the westbound entrance ramp at Exit 49 when he allegedly became involved in an argument with Celvin Diaz, 40, of Hicksville, who was driving a 2005 Nissan.
Diaz said that Maduro was following him too close and both Diaz and Maduro stepped out of their vehicles and began to argue, according to police, and that when Maduro decided to leave, he had to drive the tractor-trailer onto the grass to get around Diaz who was blocking traffic on the entrance ramp. The back of the tractor-trailer then struck Diaz, pinning him against the car.
Diaz was transported by Melville Fire Department Rescue to Nassau University Medical Center and treated for a fractured pelvis. Maduro continued westbound on the LIE and was stopped by Nassau County Highway Patrol officers near exit 34. Further investigation by detectives revealed that Maduro was unaware he struck Diaz with the tractor-trailer. Suffolk County Police Motor Safety Carrier Unit responded and examined the tractor-trailer. Maduro was issued a summons for an insufficient brake. The investigation is continuing.
