On behalf of the board of trustees, I'd like to offer our sincere apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced over the past few weeks because of unusual and unadvertised closings at the Hicksville Public Library. We especially thank all groups that had to reschedule programs during this period of time. Luckily, some of the programs were transferred to the Computer Resource Center. Special thanks to Evelyn Pusinelli, adult program coordinator, and Joanne Gramaglia, children's librarian, for handling these last minute revisions.
Unfortunately, our heating and air conditioning system is a bit antiquated and parts are difficult to obtain. Once located, the parts took longer to be shipped than we anticipated and during that period of time the weather turned extremely humid. To help the situation, we authorized the purchase of desk and ceiling fans, but that seemed to make matters worse by blowing dust particles from the bookshelves into the air. There was a day or two where the humidity was lower but windows at the library are sealed shut. With only the front door to open, there was no relief.
With temperatures within certain areas of the building reaching 90 degrees, the board was faced with making a crucial decision. Once we realized the units would not be repaired we chose to close the library for the health and safety of the staff and patrons alike. The board commends the staff for working under these stressful conditions.
Thankfully all parts have now been received and the units are repaired. Regular hours have been reinstated.
