Recently, my mother received from her cousin a lovely book about the history of Hicksville written by Richard and Anne Evers. Mr. Evers was a social studies teacher in our district for many years. Being lifelong Hicksville residents, we found this book to be quite interesting. Some of this information was taught in the 1960s when my teachers were Fred Healy, Raymond McDonough, and probably the most respected teacher of Hicksville's history, the late John Pitrelli.
I remember Mr. Evers very well although I was never fortunate enough to be in his class. He has put together a wonderful collection of Hicksville's history, trivia and memorabilia. It is particularly interesting to my family because it contains information about relatives (Judge Joseph Steinert, Oyster Bay town supervisor and justice of the peace at the former courthouse, now the Gregory Museum), other families and neighbors and others whose names are familiar Hicksville residents from years ago. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Evers for something all lifelong Hicksville residents can enjoy.
