Amherst College senior tri-captain Shaina Pollack of Great Neck was named the NESCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs to the program's first-ever conference title. Amherst defeated seven-time defending NESCAC champion Bowdoin College on Saturday, March 1, before knocking off second-seeded Tufts University in that following Sunday's finals.
Pollack averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists during the final rounds of the championship tournament. After pouring in a game-high 18 points in Saturday's semifinal win over Bowdoin, Pollack netted a career-high 22 points during Sunday's championship victory over Tufts. For the weekend, Pollack was 6-for-10 from three-point range and 12-for-14 from the free throw line, as she was clutch from the charity stripe down the stretch during the title game.
The NESCAC was set to announce its 2008 Women's Basketball All-Conference Team the following week, and Pollack's stellar senior season has certainly warranted postseason recognition. She is 16th in the NESCAC in scoring average (11.2 ppg) and third in assists per game (4.89), while her free throw percentage of .802 is the fifth highest in the conference.
