There was an article in The New York Times not long ago about a man who was enrolled in a drug rehabilitation program at Phoenix House in Manhattan.

One day, on his way to Phoenix House, the man passed a homeless woman who was sleeping on the sidewalk. Knowing that there were some old blankets that weren't being used, he asked the woman if she'd like one. She replied that a sleeping bag would be more helpful.

That day, while at Phoenix House, the man took some blankets, borrowed their sewing machine, and made a sleeping bag.

He gave it to the woman the next time he saw her. And then he kept making sleeping bags to give to other homeless people he met living on the streets. To date, there are more than 30 people using those homemade sleeping bags.

I thought it was remarkable that someone with many problems of his own, with little in the way of worldly possessions, had found a way to help someone else in need.

Remarkable. And a beautiful act of kindness.
