  • News: Arrandale/Middle Neck Apartment Proposal Revealed

    On Sept. 4, the Village of Great Neck Board of Zoning and Appeals set the tone for a hard look at a complicated, multi-faceted proposal to build a 78-unit, 4-story apartment building on the northwest corner of Arrandale Ave. and Middle Neck Road. The area is zoned commercial, but the applicant is not seeking rezoning, but rather is asking for three substantial variances. FULL STORY

  • News: What to Do About East Shore Road!

    With the building moratorium for East Shore Road due to expire at the end of this year, the Village of Great Neck is committed to having a plan in place and not keeping property owners in limbo any longer. The issue was addressed at the board's Sept. 2 meeting, when Mayor Richard Deem and the board of trustees discussed findings for the final GEIS (generic environmental impact statement). The findings will be used to help give direction to the village's consultants Frederick P. Clark Associates, as they work on the concept for East Shore Road. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Long Island American Heart Walk Oct. 26

    The American Heart Association's annual Long Island American Heart Walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26 at two locations: The New York Institute of Technology in Central Islip and Nassau Community College in Garden City. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m. Walk festivities include: bagels, coffee and heart-healthy snacks; mascots, music, entertainment and a health fair, including blood pressure screenings, health risk assessments and free literature. All residents, businesses, churches, clubs and survivors of heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular-related surgery from Suffolk and Nassau counties are encouraged to volunteer or participate. More than 5,000 people are expected. American Heart Walk, nationally presented by NutriSoy and Subway, is locally supported by, Gold sponsor Astoria Federal Savings and Media sponsors WALK-FM, WBAB-FM and WBLI-FM. FULL STORY

  • Sports: USPS Basic Boating Course

    The United States Power Squadrons' Basic Boating Course will be given at the Sousa Elementary School, 101 Sands Point Road, Port Washington starting Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. for eight weeks. The course covers boating fundamentals for all boaters from the operator of a small outboard to the skipper of a family cruiser or sailboat. It includes boat handling, equipment requirements, navigation rules, aids to navigation, chart and compass fundamentals and basic piloting and plotting techniques. Personal Water Craft certification is also offered. FULL STORY
