The Garden City Public Library Board of Trustees, including Chair J. Randolph Colahan, Vice Chair Gloria C. Weinrich and Trustees John Pascal, Barbara Brudie-Martis and Elizabeth Huschle, are pleased to announce the appointment of Margaret A. Cincotta as the new director and welcome her to the position, effective Oct. 13. Cincotta will replace Alan Roeckel, who recently retired after a long and successfully career in Garden City.
The trustees were aided in their extensive search by Gerald Nichols, who is widely respected in the library management field and current head of the Palmer Institute for Public Library Organization and Management at C.W. Post Campus -Long Island University. Additionally, the board of trustees compliments Assistant Director Tom Witt for the excellent manner in which he has served as acting director.
Cincotta, who earned a bachelor's degree from Molloy College and a graduate degree in library science from C.W. Post, also earned an Advanced Certificate in Library Management from the University of North Texas. She brings more than 30 years of library experience and training to her new position.
Cincotta began her career while in high school as a page in the Hempstead Library and continued there as a reference librarian and children's librarian upon completion of her undergraduate degree. She continued to gain experience through positions in the East Meadow Public Library and the Levittown Public Library, where she served as assistant director for three years. In 2001, Cincotta joined the North Merrick Public Library as director and a number of initiatives were implemented during her tenure. Among them was the modernization of the computer system community outreach programs and improvement of the library's collection. She also served on various library committees.
In regards to her hiring, the library board of trustees stated, "We all look forward to Ms. Cincotta being a part of our library community. We know the people of Garden City will continue to find the Garden City Public Library as the beautiful and innovative facility the librarians and staff have provided patrons through the years."
